By: Michael J. Little, Executive Director The time to act is now! As guardians of our nation's maritime interests, we understand better than anyone the importance of a well-supported U.S. Coast Guard. It's a matter of national security, a safeguard of our borders, and a keystone in ensuring the free flow of commerce that fuels our economy. Right now, we have before Congress H.R. 2741, the Coast Guard Authorization Act of 2023, a pivotal legislation that promises to reinforce our ranks with the funding necessary to address critical mission capacities and infrastructure backlogs. However, this bill cannot pass into law without your active engagement.
We are calling on each of you, the proud members of the CWOA, to take immediate action. Reach out to your members of Congress and urge them to support this bill. Your voice carries the weight of our combined 3,300 members, and when joined with the chorus of over 40,000 active-duty personnel, it becomes impossible to ignore. Here's what you can do: 1. Send the prepared letter to your representatives in Congress. It's ready to go and lays out the stark realities and the profound need for their support of the Coast Guard Authorization Act. 2. Personalize your message. Share your story, your service, and what the passage of this bill means to you and your fellow officers. 3. Spread the word. Encourage your colleagues, friends, and family to also reach out to Congress. There is strength in numbers, and a unified message from multiple constituents will make an impactful statement. 4. Follow up. Don’t just send a letter—make a call, schedule a meeting, make your support for the Coast Guard Authorization Act known. Remember, this isn't just about numbers on a bill; it's about ensuring that the U.S. Coast Guard can effectively carry out its missions today and in the future. It's about securing the necessary funding to enhance our readiness and to honor our commitment to the nation. Your involvement can make a significant difference in the passage of H.R. 2741. Stand with us, take action, and let’s make sure our voices are heard loud and clear in the halls of Congress.
