A coalition of veterans and service member organizations, including the Chief Warrant and Warrant Officers Association (CWOA), has filed a brief with the US Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit, supporting the Federal Trade Commission's new rule aimed at protecting consumers, particularly veterans and military families, from deceptive practices by car dealers. The brief underscores the vulnerability of service members to such scams and defends the FTC's regulation against opposition from the National Automobile Dealers Association and the Texas Automobile Dealers Association. A coalition of military organizations, including the Sea Service Family Foundation, the United States Coast Guard Chief Warrant and Warrant Officers Association (CWOA), the United States Coast Guard Chief Petty Officer Association (CPOA), AND United States Coast Guard Enlisted Association (CGEA), is advocating for two critical pieces of legislation, S. 2835 and H.R. 5641, which aim to protect service members from financial harm during government shutdowns. They stress the importance of safeguarding the financial security of military personnel, citing the negative impact of the 2019 government shutdown on the Coast Guard. The coalition urges legislators to support these bills and extend similar financial protection to NOAA and PHS members who support the Coast Guard, emphasizing the importance of ensuring service members receive the stability they deserve and avoiding future government shutdown challenges.
