Challenges and Solutions in Supporting Military Survivors: Insights from Congressional Hearing2/15/2024 By: Aditi Sapru, Legislative Intern The Congressional hearing on January 30, 2024, highlighted the complex challenges faced by the survivor community of military veterans and examined the Department of Veterans Affairs' initiatives to address their needs, revealing a pressing need for comprehensive reforms. Despite comprising only 1% of American families, survivors lack seamless access to healthcare and benefits, with their issues often considered a low priority. Proposed legislative actions, like the Survivors Benefits Delivery Improvement Act and the Prioritizing Veterans Survivors Act, aim to rectify these disparities and ensure equitable support for military survivors, emphasizing the urgency of addressing their needs promptly. Hi, I am Aditi Sapru, an undergraduate student at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). I am currently double majoring in Economics and Political Science. I am someone who is extremely interested in the legal space, whether it be through politics, law or other avenues like international relations. I look forward to gaining more real world experience through this internship, and learn more about the Coast Guard and its political position. My name is Aspen Aldama, and I am an undergraduate student at the University of Redlands. Through the Johnston Program, I am studying concentrated areas of business administration, political science, public policy, and finance. I have always been enthralled by the policies that shape our political landscape and change the conversations that occur not only in public but with politicians and policy-makers. Thus, this internship is essential for me to further my knowledge and experience in understanding legislation, and to provide support for the Coast Guard. I look forward to working with a well-esteemed staff to make this happen. Hi there! My name is Garrett, and I am a senior at the University of Rochester pursuing a B.A. in political science. As a student, I have centered my studies on elections and campaigning. In particular, I have been interested in understanding current election laws and the motivations of voters. To that end, I am conducting research that seeks to analyze the effect of artificial intelligence disclaimers in political advertising on perceived voter credibility--a topic that puts me in the middle of my interests: campaigning and public opinion. Outside of research, I also have an interest in legislation, and I am excited to join the CWOA crew to gain more practical knowledge of the legislative process! |
