As the deadline for Congress to pass a budget looms, the Chief Warrant Officers Association (CWOA) is closely monitoring the situation to assess its potential impact on military families and veterans. While much of the current discourse is speculative, the stakes are undeniably high, and we feel it is important to share our observations and projections with our members.
If Congress fails to pass a budget by tonight, we anticipate that Republicans may remain steadfast in their position, potentially allowing the shutdown to persist until January 3, when they are set to take control of both the House and Senate. This strategy would likely position them to secure key concessions during negotiations. However, such a scenario could have serious implications for military families and veterans. If the shutdown extends through the new year, service members may face delays in receiving their January 1 paychecks. Should Congress pass a budget after January 3, any subsequent veto by the President could result in minor delays of a few days in processing pay. While this would represent a less severe outcome, even short-term interruptions can create undue stress and financial hardship for our members and their families. The CWOA stands ready to advocate for our community during this uncertain time. We will continue to monitor developments closely and provide updates as the situation evolves. Our priority remains ensuring that military families and veterans receive the support they deserve, regardless of the political landscape. We also urge our members to reflect on the lessons learned from the 2019 government shutdown. During that time, Coast Guard personnel and their families faced significant challenges, but the resilience and unity displayed by our community were remarkable. Let us draw on those experiences now. First and foremost, ensure that you and your families are prepared and supported. Equally important, as leaders charged with overseeing Coast Guard personnel, ensure that those under your guidance have the resources they need to navigate these potential difficulties. This time, the entire military community will be affected, which may limit the ability of banks to offer the same level of support they provided in 2019, as they will now have to accommodate the entire U.S. Military. This underscores the importance of relying on trusted organizations such as Coast Guard Mutual Assistance and the Coast Guard Foundation. Additionally, we are closely monitoring any legislation introduced to protect military pay. Rest assured, between myself and Mrs. Szymanski, we will fight to ensure that any such legislation includes provisions for the Coast Guard, so our service members are not left behind. We encourage our members to reach out with concerns or questions and will keep you informed of any significant updates as they become available. Michael J. Little CWOA Executive Director
