Join Us for the 4th Annual Captain’s Cup Golf Tournament!
This year, the Republic of Texas Chapter proudly presents the 4th Annual Captain’s Cup Golf Tournament, a cherished fundraiser that brings together distinguished guests and community members. Previous attendees have included Admiral Karl Schultz (26th Commandant of the Coast Guard), Master Chief Jason Vanderhaden (13th MCPOCG), Rear Admiral Jon P. Hickey (CG-092), NBA veteran Romain Sato, and LPGA star Katherine “Kate” Smith. This tournament provides a fantastic opportunity for active duty, reserve, and retired Coast Guard members to enjoy a day of golf alongside local community members. The event was initiated by CWO3 Shane Truelove, USCG (Ret.), who secured the first 13 individual sponsors, crucial for its launch. Partnering with the Lone Star Chapter of the CPOA and the Lone Star CGEA Branch has also been vital. They organize the putt-putt tournament, recruit volunteers, and serve all the participants delicious Rudy’s BBQ for lunch. As the tournament has gained popularity, numerous well-known sponsors, including BW LNG, Buffalo Marine, Del Papa Distributors, Houston Texans, and the Houston Astros Foundation, have joined in to help ensure its success. The thousands of dollars raised have provided critical financial assistance to Coast Guard members in the greater Houston area facing hardships. For instance, after the tragic loss of a member and their spouse, we supported their parents with immediate financial aid for funeral arrangements while caring for their two young grandchildren. In another case, we helped a junior enlisted member cover travel, parking, and meal expenses while their spouse underwent aggressive cancer treatment at MD Anderson Cancer Center. We also extend our support through gestures of comfort, providing flower arrangements and sympathy cards to shipmates grieving the loss of loved ones. Additionally, we honor exceptional junior enlisted members, including those recognized as Sector Houston-Galveston Enlisted Person of the Year. A poignant example of our community support was when CWO4 Jeffry B. “Broko” Boland was diagnosed with terminal cancer. Alongside the Sabine Chapter (CWOA), we presented him with a decorated shadowbox, honoring his dedication to the Coast Guard. He received it in a heartfelt gathering at his home shortly before his passing. Afterward, we quickly arranged for a Service Dress Blue uniform to honor his memory, fulfilling his family’s request to preserve his original uniform. As we reflect on these impactful moments, we eagerly anticipate our next golf tournament fundraiser on November 22, 2024, at Moody Gardens Golf Course on Galveston Island, TX. If you’re interested in sponsoring or participating, please reach out to CWO4 Gary L. Sanchez, President of the Republic of Texas Chapter, at [email protected] for more information.
